Curious about which video games left players the most disappointed? A new study ranks the top 15 worst-rated games based on Steam player reviews and Steam sales data. It’s interesting and a little sad to see that many of the games with the worst ratings come from much-loved franchises.
I actually didn’t mind some of these games. Assassin’s Creed, Valhalla wasn’t a bad game, and I’m not sure it deserved a spot here.
It’s also important to note that this ranking only looks at Steam’s top 100 games in terms of sales, too. So while there have probably been some much worse games than those here, they didn’t sell so well so were excluded from the study.
15. KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-
Despite the nostalgia, 28.24% of reviews are negative, with players expressing dissatisfaction with the port’s performance issues. This collection of remastered titles didn’t quite meet fans’ high expectations.
14. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint
With 28.50% of reviews being negative, Ghost Recon Breakpoint disappointed many fans. Critics point to its lackluster gameplay and technical issues as the main culprits for its poor reception.
13. Battlefield V
Battlefield V garnered 29.43% negative reviews. Players were let down by its historical inaccuracies and perceived lack of innovation compared to previous titles in the series.
12. NARAKA: BLADEPOINT
This battle royale game has a 30.19% negative review rate. Despite its unique combat system, many players found it repetitive and plagued with technical issues.
11. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
With 30.85% negative reviews, Valhalla fell short for some due to its numerous bugs and perceived lack of depth compared to earlier entries in the series.
10. Total War: WARHAMMER III
Combining two beloved franchises, this game still managed to get 32.04% negative reviews. Many players cited unfulfilled expectations and technical issues as reasons for their disappointment.
9. Once Human
This post-apocalyptic survival game, released in July 2024, has a 35% negative review rate. Despite its initial hype, players have criticized its lack of content and repetitive gameplay.
8. War Thunder
With 36.8% negative reviews, War Thunder, a military vehicle combat game, has received criticism over its grindy mechanics and issues with balancing.
7. F1 24
The well-known racing simulator F1 24 has 37.8% negative reviews. Many players expected more from this major title, citing a lack of innovation and various technical problems.
6. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
Despite its pioneering status in the battle royale genre, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS has 41.4% negative reviews. Players have voiced frustration over persistent bugs and poor optimization.
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
With 41.7% negative reviews, this installment of the popular Call of Duty series didn’t live up to the hype. Fans were disappointed by its lack of new features and problematic launch.
4. EA SPORTS FC 24
Ranking fourth with 43.8% negative reviews, FC 24 was criticized for not innovating enough and failing to address issues present in previous games.
3. The First Descendant
This cooperative third-person shooter, released in July 2024, has 46.8% negative reviews. Despite a high peak player count, it failed to maintain its audience due to repetitive gameplay and technical issues.
2. Battlefield 2042
With 55.8% negative reviews, Battlefield 2042 is the second most disappointing game. Long-time fans were unhappy with the game’s bugs, balance issues, and overall lack of polish.
1. Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2 tops the list with a staggering 80.9% negative reviews. Players felt it did not live up to the original’s legacy, citing issues like poor balance, lack of content, and a disappointing free-to-play model.
Methodology
The study was conducted by World of Card Games, analyzing the top 100 best-selling games on Steam. They used SteamDB data to gather the number of positive and negative reviews for each game, calculating the percentage of negative reviews to rank the games.
