A Very British Halloween: How We’re Celebrating Spooky Season

Sharing is caring!

Halloween in the UK has become more than a one-night wonder—it’s grown into a season filled with costumes, spooky décor, and unique traditions. From Gen Z house parties to family-themed pyjamas, Brits are embracing Halloween in their own style, taking inspiration from pop culture, social media, and a bit of nostalgia. Here’s what’s trending across the country for Halloween 2024.

Costume Craze: Pop Culture and Iconic Looks

Halloween costumes are leaning heavily into pop culture this year, with UK fans taking cues from celebrities and iconic film characters. Searches for “It girl Halloween costumes” have surged, with Gen Z dressing up as trendsetters like Charli XCX and Olivia Rodrigo. Notably, searches for Charli XCX-inspired makeup have jumped by over 2,300%, showing a distinct love for her edgy look. Additionally, classic icons such as Priscilla Presley and Amy Winehouse are back in fashion, as younger generations adopt their timeless styles for a nostalgic Halloween feel.

Gen Z Takes Halloween to New Heights

Halloween’s biggest fans in the UK? Gen Z. For many in this age group, Halloween now outranks even Christmas in terms of excitement. Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z’ers celebrate by hosting house parties or joining in office festivities, and many spend months planning their outfits to create a standout look. From DIY decorations to bold costumes inspired by reality stars and musicians, they’re putting a fresh spin on spooky season.

Ghoulish Gifting: Halloween Presents on the Rise

The tradition of Halloween gifting is growing in the UK, especially among families and friends. This year, 43% of Brits plan to give Halloween-themed gifts, with novelty sweets, pyjamas, and ‘boo baskets’ among the most popular items. In fact, demand for Halloween pyjamas increased by over 200% in 2024 compared to last year. This trend reflects a shift towards Halloween as a season of togetherness, where families gather in matching Halloween sets for cosy nights in.

Nostalgic Décor with a Modern Twist

Vintage-inspired decorations are also trending, with Brits using ‘70s and ‘90s Halloween themes in their homes. Asda and other retailers report high sales of items like velvet pumpkins, boho décor, and Halloween wreaths, adding a nostalgic charm to the season. Surprisingly, competition among neighbours for the best Halloween décor is strong, especially in the South West, where over half of residents admit to “keeping up with the Joneses” to have the spookiest house on the block.

Halloween Treats Beyond Sweets

Food has always been central to Halloween, but it’s not just about sweets anymore. Halloween-themed snacks and meals, such as ghost pizzas and pumpkin crumpets, are gaining popularity. In fact, nearly a quarter of Brits now enjoy a “Halloween picky-tea,” a relaxed meal with a mix of themed finger foods, a tradition particularly popular in places like Newcastle. Some households even serve up pizza slices to trick-or-treaters, creating a fresh take on the typical Halloween fare.
