18 Worst Designs in Modern Architecture

Sharing is caring!

I’ve always enjoyed discovering creative designs, but some modern buildings make me stop and think, “What were they going for here?” Maybe it’s a structure that’s wildly impractical or just plain odd. From skyscrapers that can melt cars to houses that seem allergic to comfort, these designs certainly make a statement—just not the one they intended. Sometimes, chasing bold ideas leads to results that confuse more than they captivate. Here are some architectural choices that might have aimed for brilliance but landed far from it.

The Walkie-Talkie Skyscraper, London

This towering glass structure became infamous for focusing sunlight so intensely that it melted parked cars and cracked shopfronts. The design flaw stemmed from its concave glass panels, which acted like a giant magnifying glass. While it’s an impressive sight in the London skyline, its dangerous unintended effects earned it plenty of bad press.

This pyramid-shaped hotel was meant to be a shining symbol of Pyongyang’s modernization, but decades later, it’s still incomplete. Its massive, foreboding structure towers over the city, more an eyesore than a marvel. It’s been dubbed the “Hotel of Doom” because of its poor planning and lack of usability.

The Aldar Headquarters, Abu Dhabi

This circular building looks like a giant coin and is definitely eye-catching—but not for the best reasons. While it’s an engineering feat to create such a structure, it’s been criticized for being more of a novelty than a functional office space. The design is polarizing, and many see it as impractical for its purpose.

Vdara Hotel, Las Vegas

The Vdara Hotel’s reflective glass panels focus sunlight into a “death ray” so hot it can burn skin and melt plastic poolside furniture. This flaw turned what should have been a relaxing retreat into a dangerous experience for its guests. It’s a lesson in considering environmental factors when designing flashy buildings.

Elephant Building, Bangkok

While the idea of a building shaped like an elephant sounds whimsical, the execution fell flat. This structure is a mix of office spaces and apartments, but its boxy, cartoonish appearance feels awkward and dated. Locals have mixed feelings about the design, with some calling it charmingly quirky and others labeling it an eyesore.

Nicknamed “The Pants,” this massive structure has an unusual looped design that divides opinions. Critics argue that it sacrifices elegance for attention-grabbing oddity. While it stands as a symbol of modern China, many find it unappealing and impractical in its layout.

Torre Velasca, Milan

This tower looks like a medieval fortress transplanted into a modern cityscape, complete with narrow windows and an awkward top-heavy design. Critics argue that it disrupts Milan’s architectural harmony, clashing with the surrounding historic beauty. It’s often listed as one of Europe’s ugliest buildings.

Federation Square, Melbourne

Australia’s Federation Square was meant to be a cultural hub, but its jagged, chaotic architecture is polarizing. Locals either love its avant-garde look or wish it didn’t exist. The clashing materials and irregular shapes leave many feeling disoriented rather than inspired.

Zizkov TV Tower, Prague

This structure looks like a mix between a spaceship and a strange, climbing toy, thanks to its massive concrete tower and baby-shaped sculptures. While some praise its quirky design, others see it as an unattractive blot on Prague’s skyline.

Trump Tower, Las Vegas

The all-gold façade of Trump Tower screams opulence but feels garish in the context of Las Vegas’ already loud aesthetic. Critics argue that its excessive design lacks subtlety, blending into the skyline for the wrong reasons.

The Louis Vuitton Foundation, Paris

This modern museum’s cloud-like design features curved glass sails that seem to float. However, many argue that it’s more of a structural spectacle than a welcoming space for art. Its design prioritizes form over function, leaving visitors feeling disconnected from the exhibits.

Designed by Frank Gehry, this museum resembles a pile of melted plastic, with clashing metallic colors that seem out of place. While it’s meant to symbolize the fluidity of music, critics find it disjointed and jarring.

This apartment block stands out with its bright red “hole” in the middle, which is supposed to symbolize communal living. Unfortunately, many see it as cold and uninviting, especially for a residential structure. Its geometric design lacks the warmth of a traditional apartment complex.

The Atomium, Brussels

Built for the 1958 World Expo, this massive steel structure resembles a molecule. While it’s a landmark, its impracticality as a usable space limits its appeal. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it design that draws as much criticism as it does admiration.

The Lotus Building, Wujin

This structure looks like a lotus flower rising from a lake, and while it’s visually striking, its function as an office space is less impressive. Critics argue that its elaborate design overshadows its purpose, making it more of a decorative piece than a functional building.

While this tower has an elegant façade, its vertical rods make it a magnet for climbers, leading to serious safety concerns. Its minimalist design has also been called bland and uninspired, blending too easily into the urban jungle.

This ultra-thin residential skyscraper has drawn criticism for its lack of structural stability and the unpleasant noise it creates during high winds. Despite its luxury label, many view it as a stark, sterile addition to Manhattan’s skyline.

The Kelpies, Scotland

These two enormous horse-head sculptures are a tourist attraction but have been criticized for being more kitsch than classy. While they celebrate Scotland’s heritage, some argue that they lack the timelessness of good public art.
